Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and former actor, is set to be sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
The appointment marks a significant political shift in the state as a former cinema star transitions from the screen to the highest executive office. This move follows a period of intense government formation talks involving several key political alliances.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will administer the oath of office. The TVK secured 108 seats in the assembly [1]. To reach a majority in the 234-member assembly, Vijay garnered support from several coalition partners.
According to some reports, the TVK's tally is bolstered by the Congress party, which won five seats [2], as well as the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, which each won two seats [2]. This combination brings the total support to 118 seats [2]. However, other reports said that the alliance between the TVK and Congress provides a total of 112 seats [1].
The transition comes after the TVK established its presence in the legislative body through a strong electoral performance. The party's ability to align with both the Congress and left-wing parties was essential in securing the governor's nod for the government formation.
Vijay's entry into the chief minister's office follows his career as a prominent actor and the subsequent launch of his political party. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a major event in the state, signaling the start of a new administration under the TVK banner.
“Vijay is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu”
The ascent of Vijay to the chief ministership underscores the enduring influence of cinema and celebrity culture on the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. By building a coalition that includes both the Congress and left-wing parties, the TVK has successfully bridged the gap between a populist movement and established institutional politics to secure a governing majority.
