C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won a high-stakes floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly this week.
The victory establishes Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape after the 2026 elections. The result confirms that the TVK has the necessary legislative support to form and maintain a stable government.
Vijay's party won 108 seats [1] in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election. While this provided a strong foundation, the party required additional support to reach a clear majority in the house, which consists of 234 seats [3].
The floor test took place at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in Chennai. The proceedings were marked by tension as the DMK opted to walk out of the session. Meanwhile, internal conflicts within the AIADMK played a critical role in the outcome.
A rebel faction within the AIADMK provided the necessary leverage for Vijay to secure his position. This faction said it had the support of 30 out of 47 AIADMK MLAs [2]. This defection from the established party line allowed the TVK-led government to demonstrate its majority to the assembly.
The transition of power follows a highly contested election cycle. By securing the support of the AIADMK rebels, Vijay has neutralized immediate challenges to his leadership and solidified his role as the head of the state government.
“TVK won 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election”
The successful floor test signifies a disruption of the traditional bipolar political dominance in Tamil Nadu. By leveraging a split within the AIADMK and building on a strong electoral showing, Vijay has transitioned from a political challenger to the state's executive leader, shifting the balance of power toward the TVK.
