Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party secured a majority during a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly this Wednesday.

The trust vote serves as the critical first hurdle for the new administration to prove its legitimacy and stability following the 2026 elections. It allows the government to formally elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to begin legislative business.

The session of the 17th [1] Legislative Assembly in Chennai was marked by internal strife within the opposition. A rebel faction of the AIADMK, consisting of approximately 30 [2] MLAs, broke ranks to support the TVK government.

"We have the support of 30 [3] AIADMK MLAs for the floor test," a TVK spokesperson said.

This shift in allegiance has drawn sharp criticism from the AIADMK leadership. E. Palaniswami (AIADMK) accused the ruling party of manipulating the opposition to secure its position.

"TVK lured MLAs to win TN floor test," Palaniswami said.

The proceedings took place one day after the conclusion of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The successful vote confirms that the TVK administration commands the necessary numbers to govern, despite the fractured nature of the opposition parties.

"TVK lured MLAs to win TN floor test"

The ability of C. Joseph Vijay to peel away a significant bloc of 30 MLAs from the AIADMK suggests a shift in the state's political equilibrium. By securing this rebel faction, the TVK has not only survived its first constitutional challenge but has also weakened the primary opposition's ability to block legislation in the 17th Assembly.
