Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay visited the Chennai offices of the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on June 19, 2024.
The visit underscores the strategic alliances necessary for Vijay to secure a stable majority and establish his leadership in the state.
Vijay met with leaders of the CPI and CPI(M) to express gratitude for the political support provided by the Left parties. This outreach occurred as the TVK worked toward forming the Tamil Nadu government. The coalition effort follows an election where the TVK secured 118 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly [1].
"I am grateful for the support extended by the Left parties," Vijay said.
The Left parties have played a role in the current political alignment, though their individual seat counts were smaller. The CPI, CPI(M), and VCK each won two seats in the election [2]. M Veerapandian, the CPI State Secretary, welcomed the TVK chief during the visit.
"Our parties stand with TVK for the development of Tamil Nadu," Veerapandian said.
The formation of the government has involved several negotiations with various political entities. As part of the coalition arrangement, the Congress party was offered two ministerial berths and one Rajya Sabha seat [3].
These visits to the Chennai offices signify a formalization of the ties between the TVK and the Left. By securing the backing of these parties, Vijay aims to consolidate a governing bloc that can manage the legislative requirements of the assembly. The interactions focused on mutual cooperation and the shared goal of state development.
“"I am grateful for the support extended by the Left parties."”
Vijay's outreach to the Left parties is a calculated move to ensure legislative stability. While the TVK holds a significant number of seats, the support of the CPI and CPI(M) provides additional ideological and numerical padding, reducing the risk of instability in a fragmented coalition environment.
