The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have pledged unconditional support to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party [1].

This alliance provides the necessary legislative numbers for TVK to form a coalition government in Tamil Nadu following the assembly election results released this Saturday [2].

Vijay's party won 108 seats in the assembly [3]. While this performance represents a significant debut, it fell short of the majority needed in the 234-member house [4]. The combined support from VCK and IUML fills this gap, allowing TVK to move forward with government formation.

The TVK campaign captured approximately 38% of the vote share [5]. The party's rise has disrupted the traditional political landscape of the state, a shift that has created friction among established parties.

Internal instability has also emerged within the AIADMK. Reports indicate that more than 30 AIADMK MLAs are backing a split led by senior leader C.V. Shanmugam [6]. Some of these legislators are reportedly inclined to support TVK [6].

However, the AIADMK leadership has maintained a different public stance. The party said it will not back TVK and described Vijay as a cinema actor without the necessary qualifications for leadership [7].

Despite the opposition from the AIADMK leadership, the unconditional support from VCK and IUML positions Vijay to take the oath as Chief Minister. The move marks a transition from his career in cinema to the highest executive office in the state [2].

VCK and IUML have extended unconditional support to Vijay’s party TVK.

The formation of a TVK-led coalition signifies a major shift in Tamil Nadu's bipolar political history. By securing the support of VCK and IUML, Vijay has successfully transitioned from a celebrity figure to a viable political administrator. The potential defection of AIADMK MLAs further suggests a fragmentation of the traditional opposition, potentially consolidating power under the new TVK leadership.
