Thalapathy Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections [1].
The result signals a major political shift in the state, ending the dominance of the incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and establishing a new power center led by a former cinema star.
TVK won 108 seats in the assembly [1]. While this makes the party the largest single entity, it falls 10 seats short of the 118-seat threshold required for an absolute majority [2]. The party must now navigate coalition building or support to form a stable government.
The DMK faced a historic defeat in the election. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin (DMK) lost his long-held constituency by approximately 9,000 votes [2]. This loss marks a significant blow to the party's traditional stronghold in the region.
Analysts said the shift is due to a combination of factors. A surge in the AIADMK-PMK alliance eroded the DMK's traditional support base [3, 4]. Simultaneously, a significant voter shift toward TVK disrupted the existing bipolar political landscape of the state [4].
Vijay is slated to be sworn in during a ceremony on May 7, 2026 [2]. The transition from the film industry to the chief minister's office follows a strategic campaign by the TVK to challenge the established political order.
“TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats”
The rise of TVK represents a disruption of the long-standing bipolarity between the DMK and AIADMK. By securing 108 seats, Vijay has positioned himself as the primary power broker in Tamil Nadu, though the lack of an absolute majority means the new administration will likely depend on strategic alliances to maintain legislative control.
