Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), arrived at the party office Tuesday to meet with elected MLAs following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results.
The outcome marks a significant shift in the region's political landscape, as the TVK has emerged as the single-largest party despite lacking an outright majority to govern alone.
According to election data, TVK secured 108 seats [1]. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won 73 seats [1], while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won 53 seats [1]. Because the TVK fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority [2], the party must now navigate coalition talks to form a government.
Vijay arrived at the party office and his parents' residence to wave to supporters and address party members [2]. The meetings are focused on discussing the various coalition options available to the TVK to secure a stable administration in the state.
Leaders from the Congress party have already extended congratulations to Vijay amid the ongoing buzz regarding potential alliances [1]. The transition from cinema to politics for Vijay has culminated in this legislative victory, positioning him as a central figure in the state's upcoming government formation process.
Party officials said the meetings with MLAs are intended to synchronize the party's strategy before entering formal negotiations with other political entities. The TVK's ability to secure the most seats establishes them as the primary negotiator in the current political deadlock.
“TVK won 108 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly”
The rise of the TVK disrupts the long-standing bipolar dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. By securing 108 seats, Vijay has created a 'hung assembly' scenario where his party holds the balance of power, forcing traditional political heavyweights to negotiate with a newcomer to determine the state's leadership.
