Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party have secured power in Tamil Nadu following a tense 72-hour coalition negotiation.
This transition marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as a former cinema star successfully converts a massive fan base into a governing legislative force.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections resulted in a fragmented house. TVK emerged as the single-largest party, securing 108 seats [1] in the 234-member assembly [2]. Despite this lead, the party fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority [3].
This gap triggered a high-stakes political standoff that lasted three days. Vijay was forced to negotiate with other parties to bridge the deficit and ensure a stable government. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) emerged as a crucial ally in these discussions.
The deadlock ended when the VCK agreed to provide the support of its two MLAs [4]. This agreement provided the necessary numbers for Vijay to claim the leadership and move toward the oath-taking ceremony and cabinet formation.
The rise of TVK represents a disruption of the traditional power dynamics in the region. The party's ability to secure 108 seats [1] establishes it as a serious contender against established political entities in the state.

The emergence of Vijay as a governing leader signals a continuing trend in Tamil Nadu where cinematic influence translates into political capital. However, the necessity of a coalition with the VCK indicates that while TVK has a strong mandate, it does not possess absolute control, meaning future policy decisions will require negotiation with minority partners.
