Thalapathy Vijay, leader of the TVK party, said Friday that his party secured the legislative numbers required to form the Tamil Nadu government [1, 2].
This development marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as TVK emerged as the single-largest party following the assembly election held on April 23, 2026 [1, 3]. The transition of power depends on whether the Governor accepts the party's claim to a majority in the 234-member assembly.
To reach the majority threshold of 118 seats [1], TVK has secured support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) [1, 2]. Vijay is scheduled to meet with Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan to finalize the government formation process [3, 4].
There are conflicting reports regarding the exact number of seats the coalition currently controls. Some reports said that TVK met the Governor with 118 signatures, indicating it had already reached the required majority [1]. However, other reports indicate the alliance of TVK, VCK, CPI(M), and CPI held 113 seats, which is five short of the 118-seat requirement [3].
Despite these discrepancies, TVK maintains it has the necessary support to lead the state. The party's rise to the position of the single-largest party necessitates these coalition agreements to ensure a stable administration in the assembly [1, 2].
Governor Rajendra Arlekar is expected to review the support letters and signatures provided by Vijay before officially inviting the TVK leader to be sworn in as the new chief minister [3, 4].
“TVK announced it had secured the legislative numbers needed to claim a majority”
The formation of a TVK-led government would represent a major disruption of the traditional DMK and AIADMK duopoly in Tamil Nadu politics. By aligning with left-wing and Dalit-focused parties like the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, Vijay is attempting to build a broad-based coalition to overcome the seat deficit and establish a new governing mandate.
