Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has secured the legislative majority necessary to form a government in Tamil Nadu.
This development prevents the imposition of President’s Rule in the state. By forming a coalition, the TVK ensures a local administration remains in power rather than falling under direct federal control from New Delhi.
The path to power followed a period of suspense regarding the majority mark. The TVK won more than 100 seats in the assembly election [1], but remained short of the threshold by approximately 10 seats [2]. This deficit persisted even with support from the Congress party [2].
The deadlock ended when the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), and the Viduthalai Chirukkalai Kazhagam (VCK) announced their backing for the TVK [3]. This alliance provides the necessary numbers for the party to officially cross the majority mark [3].
Vijay is scheduled to take the oath as chief minister at 11 a.m. tomorrow [2]. A joint press conference is expected to take place in Chennai to formalize the arrangement [1, 3].
Earlier reports indicated that Vijay visited Lok Bhavan, while the AIADMK also sought time with the governor [1]. These movements occurred as various factions navigated the post-election landscape to determine who could command a majority in the house.
“The TVK won more than 100 seats in the assembly election”
The formation of this government marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, as a new party successfully consolidated support from established left-wing and Dalit-centric parties. By bridging a 10-seat gap, Vijay has transitioned from a strong electoral performer to a governing authority, effectively neutralizing the possibility of federal intervention through President's Rule.
