C. Joseph Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is positioned to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu following a majority coalition.
This transition marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape as a new party seeks to establish authority and prevent the imposition of President's Rule.
The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly [1]. To reach the majority threshold of 118 seats [4], the party has sought alliances with other political entities. The Congress won five seats [2], and the IUML won two seats [3].
Support from the Left parties, including the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), reportedly brings the coalition total to 118 seats [5]. TT Shanmugam, the CPI(M) State Secretary, said, "We will support from outside, no cabinet posts" [6].
An oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow, May 9, 2026 [7]. This timeline is critical because President's Rule would be imposed after May 10, 2026, if no government is formed [8].
Despite the scheduled ceremony, some political uncertainty remains. TKS Elangovan, a DMK spokesperson, said the party has not discussed any alliance with the AIADMK and will wait until May 10 [9]. Meanwhile, Mohideen, the IUML party chief, said, "We will accept the decision made by the outgoing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin" [10].
Reports vary on the exact seat count required for a stable majority. While some sources indicate the Left parties' support pushes the TVK over the threshold [5], other reports suggest the coalition remains five seats short of the 118-seat requirement [11].
“"We will support from outside, no cabinet posts."”
The formation of a TVK-led government represents a disruption of the traditional DMK and AIADMK dominance in Tamil Nadu. By relying on outside support from Left parties to hit the 118-seat mark, Vijay's administration may face challenges in legislative stability, especially if rival parties like the DMK and AIADMK coordinate to block the coalition.
