Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake a claim to form the state government.
The meeting marks a pivotal moment in the state's political transition as the TVK attempts to bridge the gap to a legislative majority. The outcome will determine whether Vijay can secure the Chief Minister's office through a coalition agreement.
In the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election, the TVK won 108 seats [1]. While this represents a significant victory, the party remains short by 10 seats to reach a full majority [2]. To overcome this deficit, Vijay is presenting the Governor with letters of support from other political parties.
Reports indicate that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has extended unconditional support to the TVK. Additionally, the Congress party has decided to support the TVK in its effort to form the government.
To ensure party stability during these negotiations, TVK MLAs were moved to a resort in Mamallapuram. This move comes as the party pushes forward with government formation efforts amid a tense political atmosphere.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Governor’s residence, Lok Bhavan, in Chennai. Following the Governor's nod, Vijay is expected to take the oath as Chief Minister on Saturday.
The process of government formation in Tamil Nadu often involves complex negotiations between regional and national parties. By securing support from both the VCK and Congress, the TVK aims to establish a stable administration that can govern the state effectively.
“TVK won 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election”
The emergence of the TVK as a dominant force in Tamil Nadu signals a shift in the state's traditional political landscape. By relying on a coalition of regional and national allies to reach a majority, Vijay's potential administration will likely be defined by the need for compromise and consensus-building among diverse political ideologies.
