C. Joseph "Thalapathy" Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, is staking a claim to form the Tamil Nadu government.

The move marks a potential shift in regional power, as the TVK is a debut party attempting to end the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK parties.

Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Raj Bhavan to discuss the formation of the new government. While some reports indicated an oath date of May 7, 2026 [4], the Governor said Vijay must first prove he has the support of a majority of the assembly.

The TVK won 108 seats [1] in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly [2]. However, the majority required to form a government is 118 seats [3]. This leaves the TVK 10 seats short of the threshold needed to govern independently.

Governor Arlekar turned down the initial proposal for an immediate swearing-in. He said Vijay must return with the support of at least 118 MLAs before any oath can be administered [3].

This requirement forces the TVK to seek coalitions or independent support to bridge the gap. The party's debut performance has disrupted the traditional two-party system that has defined the state's politics for decades.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The TVK's entry into the legislature as a significant force creates a hung assembly scenario. Because the party lacks an outright majority, the stability of the next Tamil Nadu government depends on Vijay's ability to negotiate alliances with smaller parties or independents to reach the 118-seat requirement.
