C. J. Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is seeking support from alliance partners to form the Tamil Nadu state government today.

This development follows the April 23, 2026 [4] assembly elections, where TVK emerged as a dominant force but failed to secure an outright majority. The ability of Vijay to consolidate support from smaller parties will determine if he can successfully stake a claim to the premiership without a fresh election.

TVK secured 108 seats [2] in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark [3]. To bridge this gap, the party is seeking backing from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Left parties, including the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the CPI(M) [5]. While some reports indicate the VCK is set to support Vijay [2], other sources suggest the party has yet to officially confirm its stance [1].

Vijay is scheduled to meet Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai to stake his claim to form the government. There are conflicting reports regarding the exact time of the meeting, with estimates ranging from 4:30 p.m. [4] to 6:00 p.m. [5].

The CPI expressed support for the TVK chief's bid to lead the state. "The Governor must act in line with the Constitution. The people of Tamil Nadu have not delivered a clear mandate. Still, TVK has emerged with 108 seats. On this basis, TVK chief Vijay met the Governor and staked claim to form the government," the CPI said [6].

The political landscape remains tense as TVK attempts to finalize its numbers. The party's success depends on the formal commitment of the Left and VCK to ensure the government has a stable majority in the house.

TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark.

The formation of a TVK-led government would signal a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political order, moving away from the traditional dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. By relying on the Left and VCK, Vijay will be leading a coalition government, which may require compromise on policy and cabinet appointments to maintain stability in the Assembly.
