TVK chief Vijay is scheduled to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at 6 p.m. today to stake a claim to form the Tamil Nadu government [1], [2].
This meeting marks a pivotal shift in the state's political landscape as Vijay seeks to consolidate power through a coalition. His ability to secure a majority in the Assembly will determine the stability of the next administration in one of India's most influential states.
Vijay will visit Lok Bhavan, the Governor's residence in Chennai, to submit letters of support from allied parties [1]. The TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly [3], a figure that falls short of the 118-seat majority threshold [4]. To bridge this gap, Vijay has secured unconditional support from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and expects backing from the CPM and VCK [1], [2].
The CPI confirmed the move, saying that the Governor must act in line with the Constitution. "The people of Tamil Nadu have not delivered a clear mandate. Still, TVK has emerged with 108 seats. On this basis, TVK chief Vijay met the Governor and staked claim to form the government," the CPI said [5].
While the TVK and its allies move toward government formation, other political players remain cautious. The BJP said it will not align with any party in the current formation process [6]. The meeting at 6 p.m. is expected to formalize the transition of power if the Governor accepts the letters of support as evidence of a viable majority [1], [2].

The reliance on the CPI, CPM, and VCK to reach the 118-seat threshold indicates that the upcoming government will be a coalition. Because the TVK did not achieve an outright majority, the administration's legislative agenda will likely depend on the continued cooperation of these left-wing and Dalit-centric parties, potentially shifting the state's policy focus toward social welfare and labor rights.
