A West African Examinations Council (WAEC) official said strict computer-based testing is the most effective way to curb examination malpractice in Nigeria [1].

The move targets the operation of so-called “miracle centres,” which are facilities that facilitate cheating to ensure students receive high grades. Eliminating these centres is seen as essential to restoring the global credibility of WAEC certifications.

According to the official, transitioning to computer-based testing (CBT) removes the human vulnerabilities associated with paper-based exams [1]. These digital systems make it harder for examiners or centre coordinators to manipulate results, or allow students to use unauthorized materials during the test [2].

Stakeholders in Benue State have also highlighted the need for the council to adopt mandatory CBT to end the influence of these centres [4]. The transition is intended to ensure that student results reflect actual academic performance rather than the ability to pay for illicit assistance [3].

While the council has pushed for these reforms, implementation remains a challenge across different regions. In a previous effort to prepare candidates for this transition, WAEC scheduled a mock computer-based test for private candidates on Oct. 29, 2025 [5].

The official said that the digital shift is the only sustainable way to shut down the infrastructure of miracle centres [3]. By automating the delivery and grading process, the council aims to remove the opportunity for local officials to compromise the integrity of the examination process [2].
