Fabio Wardley has activated a contractual rematch clause to challenge Daniel Dubois for the WBO heavyweight title.

The move ensures an immediate opportunity for Wardley to reclaim the world championship, bypassing the usual mandatory challenger queue. This development keeps the rivalry center stage in the heavyweight division after a highly competitive first encounter.

The two fighters previously met on April 27, 2024. During that bout, Wardley dropped Dubois two times [1]. Despite those knockdowns, Dubois won the fight by stopping Wardley in the 11th round [2].

Wardley expressed confidence in his ability to reverse the result. "The boxing world knows my character, and Saturday night proved that without a shred of doubt," Wardley said.

Dubois has indicated he is prepared for the return match. "I stopped him in the 11th round and I’m ready for a rematch," Dubois said.

Not everyone believes Wardley is ready for an immediate return to the ring. Audley Harrison suggested that Wardley needs more time before the two athletes go back to the drawing board, Harrison said.

Wardley has ignored those suggestions by triggering the clause. The contractual agreement allows the defeated fighter an immediate shot at the title, provided certain conditions are met. The fight will determine if Dubois can defend his belt against the man who nearly derailed his victory in the first fight.

"The boxing world knows my character, and Saturday night proved that without a shred of doubt."

The activation of this clause prevents the WBO champion from seeking more lucrative or different opponents in the short term. Because Wardley proved he could hurt Dubois by scoring two knockdowns, the rematch is viewed as a legitimate contest rather than a formality, potentially shifting the power dynamics of the heavyweight division if the title changes hands.
