American rock band Weezer announced the launch of its new album, "The Gold Album," and released a collaborative single with the band Wednesday.
The project marks a shift in the band's sonic direction through a partnership with producer Kenneth Blume, also known as Kenny Beats. By collaborating with Wednesday vocalist Karly Hartzman on the lead single, the band is bridging the gap between established 1990s alternative rock and the contemporary indie scene.
"We Might as Well Be Strangers" features Rivers Cuomo and Hartzman dueting over crunchy alt-rock, according to BrooklynVegan [3]. The collaboration serves as the introduction to the upcoming record, which is scheduled for release on Aug. 21, 2024 [1, 4]. The album consists of 10 tracks [4].
Blume sought to push the band toward a more aggressive sound for this project. "I wanted to make the most violent Weezer album ever," Blume said [2].
To support the release, the band will embark on a North American arena tour. The tour is set to begin Sept. 8, 2024, in Sacramento, California [5]. The itinerary includes 32 tour stops across the continent [5].
While some reports described the project as a self-titled album, the majority of industry sources identify the record as "The Gold Album" [1, 2, 3, 4]. Similarly, while some sources suggested a 2026 tour date, verified records indicate the tour begins in September 2024 [2, 4].
“"I wanted to make the most violent Weezer album ever."”
The collaboration with Karly Hartzman and the influence of Kenny Beats suggest Weezer is attempting to modernize its sound to appeal to a younger generation of alt-rock listeners. By pairing their legacy status with the rising popularity of the band Wednesday, Weezer is positioning 'The Gold Album' as a bridge between the 1990s guitar-rock era and current indie trends.
