Thirty-five Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs were sworn in as ministers in West Bengal on May 20, 2024 [1].
The expansion aims to deliver on electoral promises and ensure balanced regional representation across the state [4]. By increasing the size of the administration, the new government seeks to solidify its grip on various districts through a broader ministerial presence [4].
Governor R.N. Ravi [2] administered the oath of office to the new appointees at the state secretariat. The ceremony was overseen by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari (BJP). Among the 35 MLAs sworn in, seven are women [3].
This move brings the total strength of the Council of Ministers to 41 members [2]. Following the ceremony, portfolios were allocated to five of the newly sworn-in ministers [5].
In a separate but related appointment, senior BJP leader Tapas Roy was sworn in as the Pro-Tem Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly [6].
The administration said the expansion was necessary to meet the needs of a diverse electorate. The inclusion of women, and leaders from different regions, is intended to reflect the demographic makeup of the state [4].
“Thirty-five BJP MLAs, including seven women, were sworn in as ministers.”
The rapid expansion of the cabinet to 41 members suggests a strategy of political inclusion and reward for the BJP's electoral victory in West Bengal. By appointing a large number of ministers and prioritizing regional and gender diversity, the Adhikari administration is attempting to build a broad-based coalition of support to stabilize its governance and implement its campaign agenda across the state's diverse districts.
