West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expanded his cabinet on Monday, June 1, 2024, with 35 new ministers taking their oaths of office [1].
This expansion allows the nationalist government to fully constitute its leadership and distribute administrative responsibilities across the state's various departments.
Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oaths at Lok Bhawan in Kolkata [1], [2]. The ceremony marks a significant transition for the administration as it seeks to solidify its governance structure following the election. The addition of 35 ministers [1] brings the total strength of the Council of Ministers to 41 [1].
Under current regulations for West Bengal's 294-member assembly, the maximum allowed number of ministers is 44 [3]. By reaching 41 members, the Adhikari administration is operating near the legal ceiling for cabinet size, a move that suggests a desire for broad representation within the government.
Adhikari framed the expansion as a fulfillment of the mandate provided by the electorate. "The full Council of Ministers of the nationalist government elected by the people of West Bengal is being constituted," Adhikari said [4].
The event was attended by a large number of party officials and supporters. The appointment of these ministers is expected to accelerate the implementation of the government's policy agenda across the region.
“35 new ministers were sworn in, bringing the Council of Ministers to 41 members”
By expanding the cabinet to 41 members, Suvendu Adhikari is utilizing nearly the entire legal quota of 44 ministers permitted by the assembly size. This strategy typically indicates a political effort to balance various factions within a coalition or party, ensuring a wide distribution of power and patronage to maintain stability within the nationalist government.
