Suvendu Adhikari (BJP) defeated incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (TMC) in the Bhabanipur constituency during the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.
The result marks a seismic shift in the state's political landscape, signaling a potential end to the Trinamool Congress's long-term dominance in the region.
Adhikari secured 73,917 votes [1], capturing a 53% share of the vote [1]. Banerjee received 58,812 votes [1], representing a 42.2% share [1]. The victory margin for Adhikari was 15,105 votes [1]. This margin is larger than Adhikari's 2021 victory in Nandigram, where he won by 1,956 votes [1].
The defeat of the Chief Minister is part of a broader trend across the state. The BJP won 206 seats in the assembly [2], while the TMC secured 80 seats [2]. The elections covered 294 total assembly constituencies [2].
Analysts said the surge in support for the BJP was a "tsunami" in Bengal [3, 4]. This shift in voter sentiment led to the upset in the Kolkata-based constituency.
Banerjee said, "All INDIA bloc allies with me," [2].
“Suvendu Adhikari (BJP) defeated incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (TMC) in the Bhabanipur constituency.”
The loss of the Bhabanipur seat by the sitting Chief Minister, combined with the BJP's overwhelming majority of 206 seats, suggests a fundamental realignment of power in West Bengal. This result likely forces a transition in state leadership and validates the BJP's strategy to penetrate urban strongholds in Kolkata.
