West Bengal officials implemented a three-tier security system at all counting centres as assembly election vote counting began at 8 a.m. [1] on Monday.
The measures aim to prevent electoral violence and ensure a credible process in a region where polling day tensions often lead to instability. By deploying a combination of central and state forces, officials intend to maintain peace during the transition of power.
State Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said the security framework is designed to be foolproof. "We have a three-tier security system involving CAPF, Armed Police and State Police for all counting centres," Agarwal said [2].
Security forces are stationed across West Bengal, including in Kolkata, to monitor designated centres. Election officials said stringent security arrangements were put in place before the 8 a.m. start [1].
To further ensure transparency and oversight, the Election Commission of India deployed 242 observers [3]. These observers are tasked with monitoring the proceedings and ensuring that the counting process adheres to legal standards.
Agarwal said the administration would not tolerate disruptions. "We will take swift action against any electoral violence and any illegal items found on polling day," Agarwal said [4].
The deployment of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) alongside state police creates a layered perimeter around the counting halls. This structure is intended to prevent unauthorized access and deter potential clashes between political supporters during the announcement of results.
