Microsoft's Xbox division has lowered Game Pass subscription prices and introduced a new "Game Pass Starter" tier to make the service more affordable [1, 2].

This pricing shift represents a strategic move to increase the value proposition of the service. By lowering the barrier to entry, Microsoft aims to attract a broader audience and better compete with Sony's PlayStation Plus offerings [1, 5].

The new Game Pass Starter tier is priced at $4.99 per month [4]. This entry-level option provides access to more than 100 games [4]. While some reports suggest the library may reach 150 games, the verified minimum is 100 [4].

Microsoft also adjusted the cost of its primary tiers. The Xbox Game Pass for both Console and PC is now $9.99 per month [1]. The premium Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier is priced at $15.99 per month [1].

To further expand its reach, Microsoft partnered with Discord. The Discord Nitro subscription, which costs $9.99 per month, now includes the Game Pass Starter tier as a bundled feature [3].

"We're thrilled to make Game Pass more affordable and bring it to even more gamers worldwide," Phil Spencer, Xbox Executive Vice President, said [5].

Amy Hood, CFO of Microsoft, said the company's goal is to make Game Pass the most compelling subscription in gaming [1]. Jason Citron, CEO of Discord, said adding Game Pass to Nitro gives members more entertainment value [3].

These changes were announced in early March 2024 to target the U.S. market and global users [1, 3, 5].

"Our goal is to make Game Pass the most compelling subscription in gaming."

Microsoft is pivoting toward a tiered acquisition strategy to combat subscription fatigue and market saturation. By introducing a low-cost entry point and leveraging Discord's social ecosystem, Xbox is attempting to convert casual gamers into long-term ecosystem users who may eventually upgrade to the more expensive Ultimate tier.
