Yindjibarndi Energy Corp has reached financial close and signed a power purchase agreement with Rio Tinto for the Jinbi Solar Project [1].
The deal marks a significant step in Indigenous-led renewable energy development in Australia. By partnering with global industrial players, the venture secures long-term infrastructure investment while transitioning heavy industry toward cleaner energy sources.
The project is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia [2]. Yindjibarndi Energy Corp, an Indigenous-led renewable energy joint venture with ACEN Corp, will lead the development of the solar farm [1]. Construction is set to begin following the securement of funding [4].
Under the terms of the agreement, the power purchase agreement spans 30 years [1]. The arrangement ensures that 100% of the electricity generated from stage one of the project will be supplied to Rio Tinto [2]. This partnership aims to provide the mining company with a consistent source of renewable electricity to reduce its carbon footprint.
ACEN Corp, a partner in the joint venture, highlighted the speed of the development. "Reaching financial close on our first project in the Pilbara within three years of the partnership's operation is a significant milestone for YEC and our shareholders," an ACEN Corp representative said [5].
The project represents a collaborative effort to integrate traditional land ownership with modern energy technology. By establishing a long-term contract with a major mining entity, the venture creates a stable financial foundation for future renewable initiatives in the region.
“100% of the electricity generated from stage one of the project will be supplied to Rio Tinto”
This agreement establishes a blueprint for Indigenous-led energy projects by linking traditional land stewardship with the operational needs of the mining industry. The 30-year contract provides the financial certainty required to scale renewable infrastructure in remote regions like the Pilbara, potentially accelerating the decarbonization of Australia's resource sector.
