Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for the rock band ZZ Top, died Aug. 17, 2024 [2], at the age of 77 [1].

Beard served as the rhythmic backbone of the Texas-based rock group for between 55 and 56 years [1]. His death marks the loss of a founding member of a band that defined the blues-rock sound of the U.S. south.

Beard died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, located in Fort Bend County [2, 4]. Bob Merlis, a band publicist, said Beard was in hospice care when he died with family members at his side.

The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death is unclear and an autopsy will not be performed [5]. Other reports noted the cause of death has not been released [1].

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons praised the drummer's legacy and personal character. "Frank was a true friend and an incredible musician; we’ll miss him dearly," Gibbons said.

Beard remained a constant in the band's lineup throughout its decades of global success. He helped steer the group from its early roots in Houston to international stardom—a journey that spanned more than half a century [1].

"Frank was a true friend and an incredible musician; we’ll miss him dearly."

The death of Frank Beard removes one of the last remaining original links to the early formation of ZZ Top. Because Beard was the only member of the classic lineup to remain constant throughout the band's entire history, his absence represents a fundamental shift in the group's internal chemistry and historical continuity.
