Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said he felt envious of actor-politician Vijay's smooth and rapid transition into political power.
The admission highlights the differing political landscapes of southern India and the challenges faced by cinema stars attempting to transition into governance. While both men leveraged their film stardom, their paths to power diverged significantly in speed and scale.
Kalyan, who leads the Jana Sena Party, spoke about the contrast during an interview with NDTV. He said that his own political career has spanned approximately 20 years [1]. In comparison, he said that Vijay's ascent to the position of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu occurred much more quickly after his first electoral contest.
"I was envious of Vijay's smooth journey into politics," Kalyan said [2]. He also said that he felt a little jealous watching the swift rise of the Tamil Nadu leader [3].
Despite the envy, Kalyan said the two regions operate under different dynamics. He said that Tamil Nadu is different, and that the political conditions there are not the same as those in Andhra Pradesh [3].
Kalyan said that building a political party requires years of effort to understand the expectations of the people. He framed the difference in their trajectories as a result of these varying regional environments rather than a lack of personal effort.
The Deputy Chief Minister's comments reflect on the volatility of regional politics in India, where celebrity influence can accelerate a candidate's rise but does not always guarantee a smooth path to executive power.
“"I was envious of Vijay's smooth journey into politics."”
The comments underscore the distinct political cultures of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. While Tamil Nadu has a long history of cinema stars successfully transitioning into chief ministerial roles, the political structure in Andhra Pradesh often requires more prolonged party-building and coalition-work, as evidenced by Kalyan's two-decade struggle compared to Vijay's rapid ascent.
