American Airlines is restoring seatback entertainment screens and expanding premium seating across its narrow-body fleet this month.
The move marks a significant shift in the airline's cabin strategy as it seeks to improve profitability and compete with other major carriers by offering more high-end amenities.
The company plans to install the screens on more than 800 narrow-body aircraft [1]. These aircraft operate primarily within the U.S. and serve as the backbone of the carrier's domestic network.
In addition to the entertainment upgrades, the airline is increasing the number of premium seats available on these flights. This expansion aims to capture more revenue from business travelers and passengers willing to pay for enhanced comfort.
The decision to bring back seatback screens is a reversal of previous strategies that relied more heavily on personal devices for in-flight entertainment. By integrating hardware back into the seats, the airline provides a standardized experience for all passengers, regardless of their own technology.
Industry analysts said the upgrades are designed to attract premium passengers who prioritize integrated amenities. The rollout begins this August, targeting hundreds of flights across the domestic network to ensure a consistent passenger experience.

This reversal indicates that the industry trend toward 'bring your own device' entertainment may be insufficient to maintain competitiveness in the premium domestic market. By investing in physical hardware and expanded premium cabins, American Airlines is betting that tangible luxury and integrated convenience will drive higher ticket yields and customer loyalty over a low-cost, lean cabin model.
