Apple filed a motion on Aug. 3 [1] asking a U.S. judge to bar OpenAI from accessing alleged trade-secret information.

If granted, the injunction could stall OpenAI's internal hardware development and restrict the movement of specialized engineering talent between the companies.
Apple's request for a preliminary injunction aims to expedite the discovery process and temporarily prevent OpenAI and two [2] former Apple engineers from using or sharing confidential data. The filing was submitted to the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
Apple alleges that OpenAI is attempting to obtain proprietary AI-hardware designs and other trade secrets to accelerate its own hardware efforts. The company is seeking to protect its intellectual property from being integrated into a competitor's products.
"Apple asked the court to expedite discovery and issue a preliminary injunction that would bar OpenAI from accessing any alleged Apple trade‑secret information," Apple's legal team said in the filing.
The dispute centers on the recruitment of personnel and the potential transfer of internal documentation. The legal team for Apple is pushing for a rapid court response to mitigate the risk of permanent loss of proprietary advantages.
"We are seeking a temporary restraining order to protect our proprietary AI‑hardware designs and related confidential information," an Apple spokesperson said.
The lawsuit follows allegations that OpenAI attempted to recruit former Apple engineers to gain access to internal documents belonging to the iPhone maker. The case now rests with the federal court to determine if the risk of irreparable harm justifies an immediate injunction against the AI company.
