China showcased more than 300 new AI products [1] during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai this month.
The event serves as a strategic display of China's intent to narrow the technological gap with the U.S. and position itself as a primary exporter of AI infrastructure. By promoting an "equitable" approach to technology, Beijing aims to attract developing nations seeking alternatives to American software and hardware.
President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the conference emphasizing a people-centered approach to artificial intelligence. Xi said that China is committed to ensuring equitable access to AI technology, framing the tools as a means for global development rather than exclusive corporate or national gain.
Among the most prominent technical reveals was the open-source Kimi K3 model from the tech firm Moonshot. The release of the K3 model highlights a shift toward open-source strategies to accelerate adoption and development within the Chinese ecosystem.
Huawei also utilized the conference to display its Ascend SuperPoD infrastructure. This hardware is central to China's efforts to build a self-reliant AI supply chain, reducing dependence on foreign semiconductors, and cloud architecture.
The conference featured a wide array of demonstrations, ranging from industrial robotics to advanced software models. These exhibits are intended to signal that China's AI ambitions remain high despite ongoing trade tensions and export controls on high-end chips.
