Hero MotoCorp has launched flex-fuel variants of its Splendor+ and HF Deluxe motorcycles in New Delhi [1].

The move signals a shift toward ethanol-based mobility in India, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels while lowering commuting costs for millions of riders.

These motorcycles are designed to operate on E85 fuel, which consists of up to 85% ethanol [2]. This capability allows the bikes to run on a variety of fuel blends, supporting the company's goal of promoting more sustainable transportation options across the country [3].

Technical specifications vary by report. One source lists the engine displacement at 100 cc [1], while another reports it as 97.2 cc [4]. Performance data for the models includes a power output of 6.3 kW at 8,000 rpm and torque of 8.3 Nm at 6,000 rpm [4].

Pricing for the new models remains inconsistent across reports. News24Online reported a starting price of Rs 72,792 [1], whereas the GaadiKey blog cited a starting price of Rs 82,710 [4].

CEO Harshavardhan Chitale said these models are the first step in a larger transition for the manufacturer. He said, "If E85 fuel becomes available, the entire portfolio of Hero MotoCorp can be made compatible with flex-fuel" [5].

The launch event in New Delhi highlighted the company's intent to scale this technology. By introducing these variants into the mass market, Hero MotoCorp is positioning itself to lead the adoption of high-ethanol blends in the two-wheeler segment [1].

These motorcycles are designed to operate on E85 fuel, which consists of up to 85% ethanol.

The introduction of E85-compatible motorcycles represents a strategic pivot toward energy independence in India. By leveraging ethanol, the government can reduce crude oil imports and support domestic agricultural producers. However, the success of these vehicles depends entirely on the rollout of E85 fueling infrastructure, as the bikes' full utility is limited without widespread access to high-blend ethanol pumps.
