A powerful earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28 [1] has forced major Japanese manufacturers to halt production across multiple prefectures.

Toyota Motor Corp. has extended the shutdown of three factories in Fukuoka until Aug. 5 [2]. The company also scheduled a production halt at its Tahara plant in Aichi from Aug. 3 to Aug. 7 [2]. These closures stem from the seismic shaking and subsequent logistics disruptions that hampered the movement of parts.

Honda Motor Co. faced additional complications at its Kumamoto plant, where activated sprinklers caused flooding [5]. This damage has forced the plant to remain shut down until Aug. 7 [4].

In the semiconductor sector, Sony Group's semiconductor subsidiary is planning a phased restart of its operations on Aug. 4 [5]. Other key chip-making facilities, including those operated by Tokyo Electron and Renesas, have also begun restart activities following the quake [1].

Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akazawa said it is difficult to make predictions with certainty, but the government will monitor the recovery of the factories and respond with full effort to ensure the economic impact of production stops is minimized [6].

The event has highlighted the vulnerability of Japan's industrial hubs to seismic activity, particularly the concentration of high-tech manufacturing in the Kumamoto region.
