Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) played video clips during a House Committee on the Budget hearing that appeared to show President Donald Trump dozing off.
The confrontation highlights growing concerns regarding the cognitive ability and physical stamina of the 79-year-old [1] president as he continues to lead the U.S. government.
During the hearing in Washington, D.C., Lieu used the footage to press Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on whether the president is fit for office. The clips showed Trump appearing to sleep during official meetings, leading Lieu to challenge Rubio's assertions about the president's health.
"You just lied to Congress," Lieu said.
Rubio denied that the president has fallen asleep during public appearances. He said that Trump did not doze off in public [3]. To support his claim regarding the president's energy levels and stamina, Rubio referenced the frequency of their late-night communications.
"He calls me at 2," Rubio said [2], referring to 2 a.m. phone calls from the president [2].
The exchange centered on whether the visual evidence of the president sleeping contradicts the public narrative of his health. While Lieu suggested the videos prove a lack of alertness, Rubio said that the president remains active and engaged in the duties of the office.
This dispute over the president's health occurred amid broader speculation about the physical demands of the presidency and how the administration manages the public perception of the president's age and cognitive function. The hearing served as a platform for members of the House to bring these concerns into the official congressional record through the use of video evidence.
“"You just lied to Congress."”
The clash between Rep. Lieu and Sen. Rubio reflects a deepening political divide over the transparency of presidential health records. By using video evidence in a formal budget hearing, lawmakers are attempting to move the conversation about cognitive fitness from social media speculation into the legislative record, forcing allies of the president to provide specific evidence of his stamina.
