Severe flooding in Odisha's Kendrapara district has destroyed homes and left thousands of residents and their livestock vulnerable to hunger.
The disaster threatens the food security and livelihoods of rural populations who rely on livestock for survival. The scale of the crisis has necessitated emergency alerts across multiple regions to prevent further loss of life.
Rising water levels in the Hirakud Dam and incessant heavy rain caused the Mahanadi River to swell, leading to widespread flooding. To manage the reservoir levels, authorities opened 22 gates at the Hirakud Dam [2]. This release, combined with local precipitation, pushed the river beyond its banks and into residential areas.
Approximately 800,000 residents across Odisha have been caught in the flood [1]. In the Kendrapara district specifically, thousands of people remain stranded as floodwaters submerged huts and critical infrastructure [4]. The destruction of these dwellings has left families without shelter during the peak of the rainy season.
State officials responded by placing 10 districts downstream of the Mahanadi on high alert [3]. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Patnaik said he has been monitoring the situation as emergency services attempt to reach isolated communities. The flooding has not only displaced humans but has also put livestock at extreme risk, creating a secondary crisis of animal welfare and economic loss.
Local reports said the situation in Kendrapara remains grim. The combination of dam releases and natural runoff created a surge that overwhelmed local drainage systems, leaving many residents with no way to evacuate their livestock or salvage food stores.
