Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said the company is the leader in the consumer augmented-reality glasses market during a recent interview with CNBC.
The claim comes as Snap promotes its new Specs wearable glasses, positioning the company to capture the emerging market for AR hardware before competitors achieve scale.
Spiegel focused on the company's current standing in the industry. "We're certainly the leader in the space," Spiegel said.
Despite the confidence in the product's leadership, Spiegel provided a tempered outlook on when the general public will embrace the technology. He said that mass-market consumer adoption will not occur until the end of the decade.
Questions regarding the commercial availability of the hardware remain unresolved. Some reports indicate that pre-orders for the Specs AR glasses are now open, while other accounts state that Spiegel sidestepped questions regarding pre-orders during a Q2 2024 earnings call [1].
The company's push into wearables represents a shift toward integrating digital experiences directly into the user's field of vision. This strategy aims to move Snap beyond a mobile application and into a hardware ecosystem.
“"We're certainly the leader in the space."”
Snap is attempting to establish a first-mover advantage in the consumer AR sector to diversify its revenue beyond social media advertising. However, the discrepancy in pre-order information and Spiegel's own timeline for mass adoption suggest that the technology may still be in a niche or testing phase rather than a full commercial rollout.
