Viewing a partial solar eclipse this Wednesday without certified protective eyewear can cause permanent eye damage and blindness.

The warning comes as millions [1] of people prepare to view the astronomical event. Using improper equipment can lead to irreversible retinal burns, making public adherence to safety protocols critical for preventing a mass health crisis.

Dr. Niamh Shaw, a science and space commentator for Sky News, said ordinary sunglasses are insufficient for protecting the eyes. These glasses do not block the intense infrared and ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun.

"If you look at the Sun with regular sunglasses, you’re still exposing your eyes to harmful radiation that can cause permanent damage," Shaw said.

Medical experts said the radiation can burn the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This damage often occurs without immediate pain, meaning viewers may not realize they are being injured until the damage is already done.
