Renewable-energy developer Sonnedix has acquired a battery-energy-storage-system portfolio in Italy with a total capacity of 260 MW [1].
This acquisition allows the company to increase its storage capabilities and support the stability of the Italian power grid. As renewable energy sources like wind and solar are intermittent, large-scale battery systems ensure a steady supply of electricity by storing excess power for later use.
The portfolio consists of two stand-alone projects [1]. The first project provides 160 MW of capacity with a four-hour duration [1]. The second project contributes 100 MW of capacity, also designed for a four-hour duration [1].
By integrating these systems, Sonnedix aims to optimize the delivery of renewable energy across the region. The four-hour discharge capability of both sites allows the operator to manage peak demand more effectively, reducing the reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants during high-load periods.
Italy has seen a growing trend toward energy storage to meet European Union climate targets. The addition of 260 MW [1] of capacity represents a strategic move to scale operations within the Mediterranean market.
