President Donald Trump unveiled renderings Tuesday for a new White House ballroom featuring a roof designed to be drone-proof and missile-proof.
The project represents a significant alteration to the executive mansion's security architecture and footprint, introducing military-grade fortifications into a residential and ceremonial space.
Speaking at the construction site of the planned East Wing in Washington, D.C., Trump said the new facility is a "gift" to the United States. The project is intended to protect the White House from aerial threats and provide a venue for future presidential inaugurations. The proposed new East Wing will span 89,000 square feet [1].
Trump said the roof will be drone-proof and missile-proof. The security features also include titanium fencing around the perimeter. He said, "It protects all of Washington" [2].
Beneath the ballroom, the renderings show a six-story underground military hospital and bunker [3]. While some reports describe the site generally as a military complex, other details specify the medical capacity of the underground levels [3, 4].
Regarding the financial cost of the construction, Trump said, "All of this was paid for by myself" [5]. Some reports estimate the cost of the ballroom project at $400 million [6].
The president's plan to move inaugurations to the White House would mark a departure from the traditional ceremony held at the U.S. Capitol.
“"The roof will be drone‑proof and missile‑proof."”
The integration of a six-story military bunker and missile-proof shielding into the White House suggests a shift toward treating the executive residence as a hardened military installation. By funding the project personally, the president creates a complex precedent regarding the private financing of federal security infrastructure and the long-term ownership or maintenance of such specialized facilities.
