TVK chief Vijay is set to form the Tamil Nadu state government after securing unconditional support from several key political allies [1].
This development marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as Vijay leverages a broad coalition to overcome a shortfall in the legislative majority. The alliance ensures a stable government following a fragmented election result.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 108 seats [2]. However, this total fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority [2]. To bridge this gap, the CPI and CPI(M) each pledged support with their two seats [3, 4], while the VCK provided six seats [5]. Additionally, the Indian National Congress extended its backing with five seats [6].
"The Left parties will extend unconditional support to TVK to ensure a stable government," said CPI(M) leader S. Ramachandran [1].
Vijay scheduled a meeting with Governor Rajendra Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan or Lok Bhavan in Chennai on May 6, 2024, to formalize the government formation [7, 8]. Reports on the exact timing of the meeting varied, with some sources citing 4:30 p.m. and others citing 6 p.m. [7, 8].
"VCK will support Vijay so that the people of Tamil Nadu get a government that works for them," said VCK chief Anbumani Ramadoss [2].
The support from the Congress party further solidified the coalition's numbers. "Congress will back TVK to form a progressive government for the state," said Congress leader K. Anbazhagan [8].
While some initial reports suggested uncertainty regarding whether Vijay would be sworn in as the chief minister, the combined support of the Left, VCK, and Congress has paved the way for him to lead the state [1, 9].
“"The Left parties will extend unconditional support to TVK to ensure a stable government,"”
The formation of this government represents a strategic consolidation of diverse political ideologies, ranging from the Left to the centrist Congress, around the TVK. By securing these alliances, Vijay has transformed a plurality of seats into a functional majority, effectively neutralizing the influence of other major parties like the DMK and AIADMK in the current term.
